-
The Hometown Project
-
The Hometown Project hopes to inspire people to be aware of the potential of their hometown, invites them to share ideas of what would make their city better, and gives them the motivation and tools to make real change.
-
Inspired by our hometowns of Prince George, British Columbia, and Medicine Hat, Alberta, we wanted to find out how we could help these places generate community and become leaders in culture, creativity, and sustainability.
-
Our four step communication design solution motivates people to realize the potential of their own hometowns, and of themselves. The stories from our cities that provoked us the most were those of individuals creating the places they wanted to live in, of people being the change they wanted to see. We wanted to help build communities that can inspire each other.
-
It's about the space we share, it's about the city we build, it's about our hometown.
-
Let's make it!
-
1. Awareness
-
1. Awareness
-
Before any kind of change can take place, people need to be aware of what kind of problems are in their community, what kind of solutions are possible, and why small cities are essential in creating a sustainable future.
-
Often it can be easy to think that innovation only happens in larger cities; that we only play a supporting role in those stories, or no role at all. But we believe that resilient systems can thrive in our hometowns and other small cities, and that these kinds of places are essential in creating a diverse global network of sustainable solutions.
-
Our hometowns are places of opportunity, where you can see the impact your actions have on your community in ways you wouldn’t be able to in larger cities. They are places we are already connected to, invested in, and care about. Places where your network of friends, family and collaborators can work together and support each other, creating a space of experimentation and innovation. The ideas we try and the solutions we create will not only help our local economy, culture and environment, but also inspire and contribute to a wider network of sol
-
2. Alignment
-
2. Alignment
-
In order to move forward, we need to embrace our shared history. By creating material that people can own, share, and talk about, individuals can start building a new civic identity, one that celebrates our past and looks towards our future.
-
We've illustrated our favourite Prince George moments, quotes, and icons. We know we’ve left a lot out, but we chose these stories because they represent a cross-section of who we were, what we can accomplish, and what kind of new history we might be able to make for ourselves. These stories are about our mistakes and successes, our stubborn and innovative spirit, and our ability to defy expectations. We wanted to show how people in Prince George can transform a city, shape a community, and give us a shared conversation to grow from, so let’s talk about it!
-
These limited edition prints are available for purchase, with the intention of creating accessible local artwork that people can continue to share and discuss. All proceeds support The Hometown Project Show and future activities.
-
3. Engagement
-
3. Engagement
-
Building off awareness and alignment, we want people to get out and explore the innovative things already happening in their city, and connect with a network of people working towards making their cities amazing, unique places to live.
-
A city’s downtown is the heart of its community; a gathering place for local commercial and civic activities. This concentration facilitates business, learning, and cultural exchange, and creates unique opportunities that can cater to our city’s environment and people. A neglected downtown removes our sense of civic identity, but it also offers us the opportunity to rebuild and recreate those perspectives and relationships.
-
Our map of Prince George chooses to highlight and celebrate businesses and places invested in revitalizing our downtown. These are places and people that are actively engaging with the community to redefine the reputation of downtown, and are working to make the kind of city they want to live in. Our downtown and our identity is malleable, we just need to shape it!
-
4. Action
-
4. Action
-
Before any kind of change can take place, people need to be aware of what kind of problems are in their community, what kind of solutions are possible, and why small cities are essential in creating a sustainable future.
-
We want to see how local citizens can be more involved in making change in their cities, and how we can learn and grow from collaboration. There’s a ton of different solutions we can choose from and make, and when we start having an open dialogue about those solutions, we can discover new, innovative and achievable actions. We know Prince George has problems, so let’s solve them!
-
Hometownproject.ca is one of our projects that we'd like to make, a website that gives individuals the tools and support to make their ideas a reality. The web platform is similar to project backing sites like kickstarter.com, but focuses on sharing and collaboration within the community, rather than just anonymous monetary support. We have designed this platform, however it is not yet coded or functioning as an actual site. We are moving forward and discovering ways this site can become a reality. If you have any feedback or would like to help us make this site real, talk to us! We'd love to hear from you.

-
The Hometown Project started from observations, conversations, and reflections in our hometowns of Prince George and Medicine Hat. This interactive research document was created for the Hometown Project exhibition, and summarizes the building blocks of ideas and feedback that created our final campaign and website system.
